Februar 2000 Verbal Judo Dr. Thompson has supplied us with an extremely valuable tool by which we can learn to communicate in a manner that maintains professionalism and obtains outcomes that are advantageous to everyone involved. His use of examples is good; however, more examples that are other than police related would make the techniques easier to apply when first beginning to use Verbal Judo. Because everyone of us must use verbal communications to get through life, and can expect confict as a natural part of life, I highly recommend the book. Dan aus ohio , 2. Februar 2000 useful advise but... I believe that Mr. Thompson has been able to articulate his street experiences, both as a university professor and as a law enforcement officer pretty well. The advice that he gives makes sence and would probably work in most situations. I believe that his points could have been made more concisely and in a society where many are very busy, the book would have been more "readable" had he gotten to the point more quickly. I prefer the more straight to the point presetation of another item carried by amazon. A little booklet called Verbal Judo, The art of Deseculating Any Difficult Situation. Which is a quick, easy read. William Davis aus Schroon Lake, New York , 12. Oktober 1999 I can't get myself to finish the book..... I was given this book to help with the way that I communicate. I really don't feel I know more now than I did before. I am still waiting to read the steps to take to help with my "verbal judo". I have had this book for about 6 months and I am only half done with it. I can't get myself to read any more of it. This guy tells lots of stories but little how to. I have had the good fortune to go through the Verbal Judo training that Dr. Thompson provides for police officers. I also have the good fortune to work with a lot of very good people who are, or who are aspiring to become, teachers. Dr. Thompson's use of clear and specific language combined with his breadth of experience have resulted in a book that I recommend most highly to teachers, school administrators and anyone who would like to improve their ability to deal with people more effectively. I can certainly see why the wimps that Dr. Thompson describes wouldn't like what he has to say! August 1999 A Mental Choke Hold Verbal Judo could also be subtitled: "Hide Your Distain, Contempt, Fear and Hatred of People with These Few Simple Steps, Even Though You'd Much Rather Just Beat The Snot Out Of 'Em." It's less an instructual tool than it is a shameless display of the arrogance that makes some people dislike police officers and question the motives for their choice in careers. Chapter One has a good story about a very creative cop who, when responding to a neighbors' complaint of a domestic aurgument which threatens to turn violent, simply drives up to the the house, opens the door, walks right into the room where the shouting is taking place, sits down on the couch, picks up a newspaper, finds something in the classified section and asks one of the argue-ees where's the phone? The couple is so dumbfounded: "Who is this policeman, and why is he sitting on our couch asking for the phone?", that the fight ends peacefully and no one gets hurt. But that's about it for enjoyable, instructional reading. The rest of the book? I dunno. The author classifies all people as being in one of three catagories: Nice people, difficult people, and wimps. I felt a certain amoumt of pomposity come through his writing; maybe it's my own problem, or maybe I'm just hacked about qualifying for the wimp catagory. This may be a good book if your learning police tactics on how to get a drunk and angry guy off a roof, out of his car, or produce a drivers license. If not, better you should read, "Tongue Fu!", by Sam Horn. I found that book more humane. Eine Leserin oder ein Leser aus Rancho Cucamonga California , 25. April 1999 Excellent book for anyone working with the public I noticed the reviewers highly recommend this book for law enforcement personnel and I agree it is probably very useful for them, but I also think this book is helpful to a much wider audience. As a school counselor, I have applied the principles in this book in many situations with students and parents which might have escalated into dangerous confrontations. I believe anyone working with the public could benefit from Mr. Thompson's ideas. bcswitzer@valint.net , 16. April 1999 Useful for police, mediators, transit operators,teachers I have training and experience as a teacher, sheriff deputy, alternative dispute mediator, and a transit operator. This book provides a very useful perspective, specific skills, and nicely supplements other training in the occupations I have mentioned.
